Palaios Ayios Athanasios

The traditional, preserved settlement of Ayios Athanasios is located 30 km from the city of Edessa and very close to the ski center Voras. The village was built in the late 16th century at the foot of the mountain Voras (or Kaimaktsalan), on Piperitsa peak at an altitude of 1,200 m., and was a thriving farming community until the '70s. Then it started to decline until 1995 when the entire village was deserted. With the construction of the ski resort in 1995 the situation was reversed.

Nowadays it is a beautiful tourist village with flower beds and tiled roof houses, samples of the very interesting traditional Macedonian architecture. You will definitely find everything you are looking for here: traditional hospitality and the possibility for skiing, trekking, tours, horseback riding, archery and more. The attraction of the village is the church, which was built in the end of 1700.
